Senior IT executive wins EMBA Scholarship

Kellogg-Schulich Executive MBA student Sumita Kandarajan is the 2016 recipient of the Franklin & Sasarman Simard Scholarship.

“The scholarship means a lot to me because I am doing the EMBA all on my own by taking a huge line of credit,” Sumita says. “This scholarship has taken a huge weight off my shoulders and the first thing that came to my mind was maybe I can take an extra elective now that I wanted to but couldn’t have afforded earlier.”

Sumita always wanted to pursue an MBA, but a busy work and family life diverted her plans. Now enrolled in the Kellogg-Schulich EMBA with classes every third weekend, Sumita believes it was the right thing to wait as she has more experience, expertise and maturity to complete the program. Currently a senior IT executive, Sumita says the EMBA is providing clarity and courage for where she wants to be.

“I can’t thank the school and the donors enough for giving me this scholarship and helping take me to the next level,” Sumita said.

The Franklin & Sasarman Simard Scholarship Endowment Fund was established at the Schulich School of Business in February 2008 by Dr. Laurence “Larry” Franklin and his wife Mei Kwong Franklin, and by Kellogg-Schulich alumnus Michael Sasarman and his wife Martine Simard Dupuy.

Blended learning offers options for busy EMBA students

The Kellogg School of Management (Kellogg) at Northwestern University, USA recently launched blended learning into its global network of EMBA programs. This model of learning adds an online feature of class studies where students can complete assigned work at home, shifting some of the time normally spent in class.

“Our typical model for electives brings students in class for almost a week, but by distributing some of the content online, they come on campus for a briefer period and can customize the class to their schedule,” said Chris Bray, Associate Director of Academic Affairs at Kellogg.

Developer Solutions Specialist at Microsoft and Kellogg-Schulich EMBA student, Madiha Qadir is a mother of two with a six-month-old baby at home. Having the option to take blended courses gave her the freedom to complete modules at her own pace with the ability to pause and re-start at any time.

“I was able to go through the lectures with my baby in my lap,” Qadir said. “It gave me peace of mind and the capacity to take this on at home.”

Director of Business Development at Cleo and Kellogg EMBA student, Shane Phair, is often on the road up to five days a week. Shifting the in-class portion of these courses means he can optimize his time in transit to complete course assignments.

“I could complete work on the plane, during evenings, whenever I had time,” Phair said. “I was able to learn more because it was more flexible.”

Even with the reduced in-class course load, both students strongly felt that they were not compromising the networking component of their EMBA experience. Instead, they feel that it was a win-win, providing them the best of both worlds.

Curiosity, determination and resiliency are the key traits that provide a strong foundation for a successful business career, according to Janice Fukakusa, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer of the Royal Bank of Canada.

“Be resilient and adaptable,” Fukakusa advised Schulich’s 2016 EMBA graduating class on October 21, where she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by York University for her achievements in business and the community.  “Learn from your experience and you’ll be surprised how often things will work out in the end.”

Fukakusa, who graduated from Schulich with an MBA in 1979, continues to have strong ties to her alma mater and is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council. “I could not be more touched and humbled to receive this honorary doctorate,” Fukakusa said.

She was inducted into Canada’s Most Powerful Women Hall of Fame in 2007, was named Canada’s CFO of the Year in 2014, and has been named among the world’s 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking for four years in a row. Fukakusa also serves on the boards of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and the Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation.

One of eight children born to parents who emigrated from Japan to Canada, Fukakusa said she has strongly relied upon her own curiosity, determination and resiliency as her career progressed, from her early years working as a cashier at a dry cleaning business to her high profile role with RBC.

Schulich Dean Dezsö J. Horváth echoed Fukakusa’s sentiments as he addressed the 36 new graduates about to transition into the next stage of their life. “You join a long line of successful Kellogg-Schulich graduates who have gone on to do great things and reach new heights. We are confident that you will do the same,” Horváth said.

On Saturday October 22nd, the Directors Guild of Canada held its annual award ceremony to recognize individuals who have had a profound impact on Canadian broadcast media. This year, the Guild honoured Schulich Arts and Media Adjunct Professor, Trina McQueen, with its Honorary Life Member Award.

McQueen, whose work has shaped Canada’s broadcast media landscape, was one of the first women to emerge as a leader in her field and has been a trailblazer for those who followed. Holding senior journalistic and executive positions: she served as head of CBC News, founding President of the Discovery Channel and President of CTV.

In recognition of her contributions, Trina was elected a member of the Canadian News Hall of Fame and the Canadian Broadcasters Hall of Fame and is an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Throughout her career, McQueen’s focus has been on the health, prosperity and freedom of Canadian media and artists. In her acceptance speech, Trina, the first woman to receive this award, spoke passionately of her belief in the role of those who tell our stories: “I thank you for the characters you brought to life, the stories you brought out of the shadows, the ideas that inspired me… I have just one more word for you: a word I hope you will keep always in your mind and always in your heart. The word is Canada.”

Company pledges $75,000 to real estate and infrastructure scholarship

As the largest real estate investment trust in Canada, RioCan invests generously in the communities where it does business. But the company’s definition of “community” has grown with their latest investment — a $25,000 entrance scholarship for students of Schulich’s new Master of Real Estate and Infrastructure (MREI) program.

“Our people set us apart and we are proud to make an investment in developing our talent pool and the future of this industry”, explains Stuart Baum, RioCan’s vice president of human resources.

RioCan has committed a total of $75,000 over three years to the RioCan Scholarship, which will be awarded to one top MREI student a year. Launching in 2017, Schulich’s MREI program builds on the School’s more than 25-year-old undergraduate program in real estate and infrastructure. The one-of-a-kind graduate program will include a common curriculum over the first two semesters, followed by an internship and an opportunity to specialize in either real estate or infrastructure.

In addition to the scholarship, RioCan plans to support MREI students with up to two fully-paid internships a year. The company is also committed to building on its longstanding relationship with Schulich by creating more opportunities for students to connect with RioCan executives, a significant number of whom are Schulich alumni.

“I think of this as a natural combination — a great real estate company backing a great real estate program,” says Andre Kuzmicki, Schulich’s MREI director. “It’s good for both parties and is a terrific indicator to incoming MREI students that marvelous opportunities lie ahead.”

“We’re excited to have a real estate and infrastructure program in the GTA that  helps more great students graduate,” agrees Baum. “The program’s twin focus on real estate and infrastructure is  a direct reflection of how RioCan has and will continue to evolve”

The inaugural RioCan Scholarship will be awarded to an incoming MREI student this January.

Nearly 300 students, alumni, staff and industry professionals attended the 11th annual Real Estate and Infrastructure Perspectives Lecture 2016 at the Royal York Hotel on October 26th. The event, which was hosted by the Schulich Real Property Alumni Association, also celebrated the new Master of Real Estate and Infrastructure program set to launch at Schulich in January 2017.

This year’s event titled “Onward and Outwards” featured keynote speaker Ron Mock (MBA ’79), President and Chief Executive Officer at Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. He shared insights on how he led the first Canadian pension plan to adopt real estate and infrastructure as mainstream asset classes, navigating these sectors in response to opportunities and risks. “Real estate and infrastructure is the future for investment,” Mock said while adding, “Schulich is generating the leaders of tomorrow to navigate this emerging industry.”

Emily Long (MBA ’15), chairperson of the event organizing committee and Financial Analyst at Crestpoint Real Estate Investments Ltd, kicked off the evening with MREI Program Director Andre Kuzmicki. She welcomed everyone, shared her personal experience within the program and how the new MREI program will shape the leaders of tomorrow.

“Students in the industry will be more prepared to make an impact,” Long said.  “Through the MREI program the candidates will build their knowledge, strengthen their network, and gain valuable practical experience.”

The event raised $35,000 for the Student Experience Fund, which provides financial assistance for current students to attend industry-specific co-curricular events like case competitions, site visits, lectures and mentor lunches around the world.

The 2016 Schulich Real Estate & Infrastructure Perspectives Lecture was generously sponsored by: Altus Group and Cadillac Fairview (Penthouse Sponsors); Canadian Apartment Properties REIT, CBRE Limited, KPMG, SMARTREIT, TD Bank Group (Mezzanine Sponsors); and EllisDon, Hullmark, Infrastructure Ontario, KingSett Capital, RioCan REIT, PCL Construction, W.P. The Kellogg-Schulich Executive MBA recently celebrated 15 years of success at its annual Alumni Gala at the historic University Club of Toronto. Since its inception, the program has become one of the top global executive MBA, ranked number one in Canada by the Financial Times of London (UK) and The Economist.

Associate Professor of Organization Studies André deCarufel started the program with a vision to make it among the world’s elite executive programs. “Our Economist ranking in 2013 was the first time any Canadian academic program had been ranked #1 in the world,” deCarufel said. “The success of the Kellogg-Schulich program has been due to 15 years of dedicated work by our staff, professors, partner schools, students and alumni.”

Associate Dean, Executive MBA Global Network, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, Greg Hanifee added: “Alumni of the program do not just want to be successful. They also strive to be contributors to society. It is a real testament to the program’s vision of creating global leaders.”

The special event had over 80 global alumni in attendance who reconnected with classmates, professors and staff. They were treated to a special keynote presentation from OMERS Ventures CEO John Ruffolo who shared insights on how technological innovation is disrupting every industry and how companies in today’s environment must innovate to survive.

BBA Finishes 2nd at International Competition

Ricky Tsang – who first used Capstone Business Simulation in Special Assistant Professor in Strategic Management/Policy, David Weitzner’s class – finished 2nd at the Capsim Challenge out of students from 303 universities across 30 countries last week.

The competition was open to students worldwide who have completed a Capsim Business Simulation in their current course. The six finalists competed in an intense eight-hour contest, making strategic and tactical decisions for their companies on hourly deadlines.

“As the real world of business today is one of cross-border competition, we need our students to be comfortable competing and engaging in open challenges,” Professor Weitzner said. “Using Capsim has allowed us to create a course that lets students see both the practice of business and the experience of management education through a new lens. It challenges their paradigm of what it means to run a business and what it means to take a course.”

Ricky said it was a challenging experience and he learned something new every round of the competition. “It has helped increase my knowledge in terms of how pricing affects the competitive environment and how to take advantage of competitors that might not have made the most optimal decisions.”

Making the finals against thousands of students around the world is a tangible addition to a student’s resume says Capsim Managing Director, Reda Chafai. “They have proof they can make business decisions intelligently, quickly and under pressure,” he said. “This is as close as you get to a real-life management experience in education.”

Toronto International Week and Global Network Friends

School’s back in session after a brief summer hiatus! And returning from the Kellogg Live-in week high point we were re-energized and ready to dive back into Module 3 of our demanding EMBA journey.

Our journey thus far (also outlined below) started with completing Module 1. There we came face-to-face with our own crash of ineptitude. Then we salvaged the pieces of our broken ego through small wiggles of hope only to plummet directly into the valley of tears, based on the intense concurrent course-load and the constant work-life balance juggling act. There was a bright spot towards the end of Module 2 as we got lifted right back up to the highest point in the program so far – the Kellogg Live-In Week.

emba-graph

Now though, we enter the third quarter syndrome. NASA studies the effects on the human body and psychological state for space travel, as well as the effects on teams in confined spaces. NASA defined third-quarter syndrome as the point where morale and motivation decline three-quarters of the way into a mission, regardless of how long the mission. Sure enough, the effects of third-quarter syndrome and growth fatigue started to take its toll during module 3. Having said that, I was particularly pleased with the opportunities in Module 3 to really apply the core EMBA learnings to ventures that I have always wanted to explore, like an actionable growth strategy for our family-owned business.

We also had the opportunity to host the global network during Toronto International Week at the end of October. The courses were an IT Strategy and Digital Transformation as well as a Mergers and Acquisitions course. International week couldn’t have come at a better time as it was a welcomed break that enabled us to rekindle old friends from the global network and foster new friendships as well. It really reinvigorated us!

We are now en route and gearing up for our Global Electives to round out our Kellogg-Schulich EMBA experience and thrilled to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Shereen Ladha (MBA ’15) has been dancing since she was in diapers. She gained national recognition as a finalist in the first Canada’s Got Talent television show in 2012. However, she always kept her dancing passion and business pursuits separate, until she was inspired while completing her Schulich MBA to combine them.

“Through my MBA I learned how to create a personal brand and was able to position what made me different,” Ladha said. “I took a lot away from the Social Media Marketing class with Professor Rob Kozinets and Customer Experience Design class with Professor Markus Giesler where I felt confident developing and creating an experience around my YouTube channel and website.”

With those skills, Ladha is generating even more buzz with her Bollywood inspired YouTube channel, “dancewithSL”. Starting the channel after completing her MBA, she was named to YouTube Canada’s NextUp list, recognizing the nation’s top 15 up and coming YouTube celebrities.

“I am beyond grateful to be recognized by Google and YouTube. It shows they’re not only highlighting me, but my culture, and fostering the growth of ethnic content across the country,” Ladha said.

Her channel has over 33,650 subscribers with over 6 million total video views and counting. Learn more about Ladha by visiting her website, or watch the video below.

You can also watch her in the “Schulich Funk” video made during her studies for the MBA Games.

Schulich Takes 2nd Place at Ethical Leadership Case Competition

Last month a team of Schulich School of Business undergraduate students won second place to take home $3000 in the first ever Ted Rogers Ethical Leadership Case Competition.

Out of the nine qualifying teams members, Schulich students Vasiliki Belegrinis, Amal Naufer, Joseph Truong and Akash Sidhu made it to the final round and finished second overall.

The competition challenged students to think of outside of the box solutions for how to deal with potential unethical behavior. The case for the competition featured an instance of bribery in East Africa and pushed students to think of local and global implications. Competing teams came from across Canada and each provided a unique outlook on the situation.

“TRELCC was an enriching experience,” says Akash Sidhu, 2017 BBA candidate. “Our team could not have come this far without the support from Jane-Michele Clark and her incredible coaching throughout the process.”

“Our most valuable take-away is understanding how important maintaining ethics and accountability is in the global context.”

Congratulations Vasiliki, Amal, Joseph and Akash!

Visualizing Big Data – The First-Ever Tableau Workshop

The concept of using pictures to visualize data has been around for centuries – from maps and graphs to pie charts. Technology has advanced the concept to an even higher level and has lit the fire under data visualization, according to Master of Business Analytics (MBAN) Program Director, Murat Kristal.

“Computers made it possible to process large amounts of data at lightning fast speeds,” Professor Kristal said. “Today, data visualization has become a rapidly evolving blend of science and art that is certain to re-shape the corporate landscape over the next few years.”

In part with Schulich’s MBAN program, the school’s recent Tableau Workshop gave over 150 graduate students the opportunity to learn firsthand how to take Big Data and create visual analytics using Tableau’s industry-leading business intelligence software.

“Using charts or graphs to visualize large amounts of complex data is easier than poring over spreadsheets or reports and conveys the concepts in a universal manner,” said Professor Kristal.

Brandi Gutfriend, Sales Consultant at Tableau, led the workshop. In her role she is witnessing the increased popularity of data visualization software and sees a growing trend for students from different specializations entering the workforce to be fluent in creating visual analytics.

At the fall convocation, Schulich Professor of Marketing, Anne & Max Tanenbaum Chair in Entrepreneurship and Family Enterprise, Director, PhD Program, Eileen Fischer earned one of York University’s most prestigious honours with a University Professorship.

“It is a very validating feeling being awarded a University Professorship,” Professor Fischer said. “Being a citizen of the university has always been important to me and this recognition shows that everything you do matters; from teaching in the classroom, to participating in the conference room, or sitting on a committee.”

A University Professorship is awarded to a member of the York faculty in recognition of their scholarship, teaching and particularly participation in University life and contribution to the academic community. Only 25 faculty members across York hold the distinction, and only three other Schulich faculty in the past 50 years have been recognized, including; Professor Wade Cook, Professor James Gillies, and Professor Joyce Zemans, C.M.

Professor Fischer has done multiple stints of service as a Chair on the Academic Policy, Planning and Research Committee as well as other internal and external committees. She has co-authored the book Qualitative Consumer and Marketing Research with Professors Russell Belk and Rob Kozinets and has earned multiple honours and awards worldwide. In the classroom, she is a pioneer in curriculum innovation, having spent over 20 years teaching and refining a doctoral course called Qualitative Methodology, recognized by students and faculty from around the world.

“Eileen Fischer has reached the highest echelons of academic success and has excelled in all dimensions of academic endeavour. The honour of being named a University Professor is truly well deserved,” said Dean Dezsö J. Horváth.
